I’ve been watching ESPN’s First Take, Cold Pizza, and 1st and 10 for a long time and it seems every time their ratings get low they make a change to the show. At least that’s what I think is the reason for most of the major changes. At first it was a great sports talk show with the daily morning news or Good Morning America for sports. In the beginning I didn’t like it as much, but the best part was the debates or the debate desk as they called it at first.
They had Jay Crawford as the major moderator and host and Dana Jacobson as co host. Then they had the beat writers and greats and debaters: funny man Woody Paige that reminded me of Will Ferrell and stern man stickler Skip Bayless. The best part was hearing the debates I loved them, and Woody Paige would get soo mad and flustered against Skip. I loved it, although most times I sided with Woody and his antics.
Then sometimes they bring on other debaters and have a three way debate. Yes, I said three ways, and those debates are just as good too. Then one day as I was watching they had changed the set of First Take and stopped bringing on people to talk. The show did less news, more debating, and less interviews.
I stopped watching for a while and the next time I saw the show Woody Paige had disappeared, just gone forever. In his place they kept a continual rotation of other debaters and more and more I saw this guy Stephen A. Smith.I’d seen him on SportsCenter a lot as a guy that really covered basketball a lot. I saw him as being closer to the players than an ChrisBroussard type who was more of a analyst guy. Finally they stopped the rotation and Stephen A. Smith stayed on and the show was only the debates I really enjoyed the show again.
The debates were funny and you actually had someone that could go toe to toe with Skip Bayless. Stephen A. Smith also impressed me with knowing way more about other sports than I thought. The show was great and I made sure to catch as much of it daily. I woke up and the show changed again.
They completely revamped the show the opening was only Stephen A. and Skip Bayless, gone was Jay Crawford, it seemed only the moderators rotated out and the set was totally different. It seems more slick and sleek and shiny and witty and funny. I love that Skip has an equal finally and someone that knows as much information as him. They bring on some great people to chat with, and even the music is a great mix of good stuff. Love the show ESPN. KEEP IT !!
